Asian American Civil Rights Orgs Denounce Supreme Court Decision in Brnovich v. DNC

SAN FRANCISCO — Asian Americans Advancing Justice, an affiliation of five independent Asian American civil rights organizations, condemns the Supreme Court’s decision in Brnovich v. DNC, a reckless and discriminatory affront to everyone’s freedom to vote.

The affiliation released the following statement today:

“Promise of democracy is only real if everyone is able to vote freely. As a result of the Supreme Court’s decision, voters of color, particularly Asian, Black, Latinx, and Native American voters, will endure even greater barriers to casting their ballots freely, safely, and equally. Instead of making it easier for all U.S. residents to exercise their right to vote, the Supreme Court sided with politicians who are trying to deliberately silence voters’ voices based on what we look like or where we live.

“Voters are calling for immediate action that protects our freedoms. Over 60% of Americans say it’s important to pass laws that make it easier for people to vote, according to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll released today. It’s time for Congress to act, even as the Court itself acknowledged that discriminatory policies persist in our democracy. Congress must delay no longer and pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and fully restore the Voting Rights Act.”

In April, Advancing Justice – Atlanta, Advancing Justice – AAJC, and Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus filed a lawsuit to ensure Asian American voters in Georgia will have the freedom to vote equally in elections, charging that the state’s sweeping anti-voting bill (SB 202) erects unconstitutional barriers to Asian American voters. This year, the affiliation is also leading efforts to engage Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in redistricting to ensure their voices help shape district maps that represent voters fairly and accurately.
