Trump’s plan for his first 100 days in office seeks to ramp up mass deportations, create a Muslim registry program, and increase the overpolicing of communities of color. At Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus, we have drafted our own plan. We’re calling it 100 Days of Justice. The goals we have set are tangible, impactful, and use our unique three-pronged approach to advance the rights of our communities and protect them from a hostile administration. We will be by your side in this next chapter in our American story, no matter how difficult the challenges. You can visit our #100DaysofJustice here for the latest on what we’re doing.
Policy & Legislative Agenda
Advocate for the passage of the CA Values Act (SB 54), which prohibits local law enforcement, school police, and other state agencies from engaging in deportations.
Introduce state legislation that will increase the availability of translated ballots and bilingual poll workers for limited-English proficient AAPI and Latino immigrant voters in California.
Implement the TRUTH Act (AB 2792) across California to ensure that all people in jails are informed of their rights before an interview with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Implement the Safe Place to Learn Act (AB 2845), which protects Muslim and Sikh students from school bullying and ensures Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (AMEMSA) students are informed of their rights.
Join statewide steering committee leading the implementation of the Voter’s Choice Act (SB 450), which mandates increased voter education to diverse communities and gives voters more options when casting their ballots.
Litigation & Legal Assistance
Challenge any effort to create a new so-called “Muslim Registry” by advocating against any program resembling the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS) and being vigilant about the rollout of new discriminatory programs.
Challenge indefinite immigration detention by bringing lawsuits against ICE on behalf of incarcerated immigrants.
Expand our housing clinic beyond eviction defense and landlord/tenant issues by partnering with Project Sentinel to accept complaints and questions regarding housing discrimination.
Support immigrant workers in the event of workplace raids by ICE and assist immigrant workers facing workplace retaliation/harassment.
Provide legal advice and representation to immigrants held in detention facilities while ICE pursues their deportation.
Community Empowerment
Conduct Know Your Rights outreach and create in-language resources for undocumented immigrants to inform them about their housing, school, workplace, and health access rights; and also conduct workshops for AMEMSA communities around their rights regarding the FBI, law enforcement, school bullying, and a potential Muslim registry.
Mobilize with our community partner network against the possibility of mandatory E-Verify (electronic work authorization checks through a federal database) and open up wider channels for U-visa certifications for eligible workers.
